Spetrum-X-Gamma
THE SPECTRUM-X-GAMMA PROJECT

Turkey's Participation in the Spectrum-X-Gamma High Energy Astrophysics Satellite:

The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey has joined the Spektrum-X-Gamma High Energy Astrophysics Satellite collaboration (SRG), with a protocol made with the Space Research Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation. SRG is a broad international collaboration including the UK, Italy, Germany, Denmark, USA (NASA), Finland, Hungary, Israel and Turkey.

SRG will contain two major X-ray telescopes (Jet-X and SODART) and a range of detectors, to be assembled on a Spektrum type Russian space module and to be launched by the Proton rocket into an eccentric high earth orbit with a four day period. The launch is planned for late 1999. SRG will be one of the few international X and Gamma ray observational astrophysics satellites active in the late 1990s, and the leading major observatory for high resolution spectral and pointing capabilities. It will collect data from black holes, neutron stars, white dwarfs, stars and galaxies, in the 1-20 keV range, with a 3-4% spectral resolution. There will also be detectors working in the extreme ultraviolet and in gamma ray energies extending to MeV.

This is Turkey's first participation in astrophysical observations from spacecraft. Turkish scientists will have thirty or more observations of 10,000 seconds on the average. The observations will be organized and the data will be analyzed at The High Energy Astrophysics Research Unit of The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey, where the scientific preparations are currently under way.
