6.1 Examples for Reducing Spectra

In this section typical EXSAS sessions are given to get familiar with the spectral analysis package without claiming any completeness:

  1. Extract a spectrum of a point source from an event file and fit a power law model to it.
  2. Calculate tex2html_wrap_inline17765 values for a grid of parameters and plot error contour lines at given confidence levels.
  3. Calculate a photon flux spectrum.
  4. Calculate integrated photon and energy fluxes.
  5. Calculate total count rate of a source.
  6. Calculate a luminosity.
  7. Convert a count rate into a flux.

For this purpose a special directory with the path name testdata1: is delivered with the system. This directory contains real X-ray data taken by ROSAT.   Since some of the calibration files may be changed in the meantime results can be slightly different.

Not as an alternative but more than a completion of these examples the study of the spectral tutorial might be valuable.
